Tongeren, in the province of Limburg, is widely regarded as the oldest town in Belgium, founded as the Roman settlement of Atuatuca Tungrorum. On a map, its historic centre is a compact oval of streets enclosed by a ring of boulevards. That ring follows the line of the old defences, and sections of both Roman and medieval walls still survive along it.
At the heart of the town stands the Basilica of Our Lady, and on the main square is a statue of Ambiorix, the Eburonian leader who resisted Julius Caesar. The town is also known for its Sunday antiques market and its Gallo-Roman Museum. Around the centre, the gently rolling fields of Haspengouw open out, dotted with orchards and small villages.
