Vichy spreads along the right bank of the Allier, and the river dominates any map of the town. A dam turns this stretch into the wide Lac d'Allier, and a continuous band of parks laid out in the nineteenth century runs along the water. Behind them, the centre forms a compact grid of avenues, hotels and villas built for visitors who came to take the waters.
The spa quarter is the heart of the plan. The Parc des Sources, framed by covered galleries, links the thermal buildings with the casino and opera, and gives the map a clear rectangular centre. In 2021 Vichy was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the Great Spa Towns of Europe, alongside places such as Baden-Baden and Spa.
The name also carries a heavier memory: Vichy was the seat of Pétain's French State from 1940 to 1944. Today the town is better known for its mineral water, its pastilles and rowing on the lake.
