Vila Nova de Gaia faces Porto across the Douro, and on a map the two cities read as one composition split by water. Gaia's riverfront is a narrow strip of quays and steep lanes. Behind it the land climbs quickly, and the street pattern loosens as it spreads south and west toward the Atlantic shore.
The riverside is known around the world for its port wine lodges, where wine from the Douro valley has long been aged and shipped. Above them, on a rocky promontory, stands the round church of the Serra do Pilar monastery. The two-level Dom Luís I bridge crosses from that promontory to Porto's old town, and it is the clearest line on the map.

Close to the riverfront, a tight cluster of lodges and warehouses fills the lower slopes. The streets here are short and steep and follow the terrain down toward the water.

To the west the municipality runs out to the ocean, and the map ends in a long sandy edge that sits opposite the curved riverbank to the north.
