Waina sits in the far south of Gansu, where the province's dry northern plateaus give way to folded, wooded mountains. The town is small and densely built. On a map its shape is set almost entirely by the land: buildings and roads keep to the flatter ground of a valley, and the outlines of the surrounding slopes are left open around them.
From above, the street pattern reads as a series of lines running roughly parallel to the watercourse, crossed by short connecting lanes where the valley allows. There is no broad grid here and no ring road, only the practical layout of a place that has had to fit itself between hillsides. A few longer routes lead out along the valley toward neighbouring settlements.
