Wangqing is a county town in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture of eastern Jilin. It lies in a river valley between forested mountains, and its map shows how the terrain dictates the layout. The town stretches along the valley floor in a long, narrow band, with the river running through it and roads following the same direction.
The surrounding country is among the most heavily wooded in northeast China. Forestry has long been a major industry here, and the mountains around Wangqing form part of the protected area established for the Siberian tiger and the Amur leopard. The population includes a large Korean community, and signs in the town are often bilingual.
