Seen from above, Whitchurch-Stouffville is mostly rural. The Ontario survey laid the land out in long concession roads and sideroads that meet at right angles, and that grid still runs across the whole municipality. Farm fields, woodlots and small hamlets sit in the squares, and the settled part of Stouffville fills only a small corner of the frame.
The Stouffville community grew along a single main street, and the newer subdivisions around it show up as curving crescents inside the older rectilinear grid. A rail line runs into town from the south and links it to the commuter network of the Greater Toronto Area. Further north, the rolling ground of the Oak Ridges Moraine breaks the regular pattern with small lakes and winding lanes.
