Wishaw lies in North Lanarkshire, southeast of Glasgow and right next to Motherwell. From above, it sits on rising ground east of the River Clyde, with the town centre along a main street and residential areas fanning out in rows of terraces and later estates. The railway line cuts across the town, and the Clyde valley stretches out to the west.
Like much of Lanarkshire, Wishaw grew during the industrial era with coal, iron and steel, and the former Ravenscraig steelworks nearby was a major employer for decades. Today the town is largely residential and commuter-oriented, with a station on the West Coast Main Line connecting it to Glasgow and beyond.
