Wolfsberg is the main town of the Lavant valley in eastern Carinthia. The valley runs roughly north to south between the Koralpe to the east and the Saualpe to the west, and the town follows its floor. On a map the settled area forms a long, narrow band, with the river running through the middle and the slopes rising on both sides.
The Lavant flows through the centre, crossed by several bridges, and the old town sits close to its banks. On the hillside above stands Schloss Wolfsberg, rebuilt in a Gothic Revival style in the nineteenth century. For centuries the town belonged to the Bishopric of Bamberg, which left it with a distinct administrative history.

The town stretches out along the valley floor, while side roads climb into the Koralpe and Saualpe foothills. This gives the map a long north–south flow.
