Wum sits in the grasslands of Cameroon's North-West Region, where the land rises and folds into hills and valleys. On a map the town does not follow a grid. Its streets bend with the terrain, gathering around a central area and then thinning into scattered settlement along the roads that climb away from it.
The town is the administrative centre of the Menchum division, an area of volcanic highlands dotted with crater lakes. The best known of these is Lake Nyos, which lies within the same division and became known worldwide after the gas release of 1986. Around Wum itself, the landscape is one of farmland, pasture and patches of forest.
A Wum map poster turns that uneven ground into a loose, organic drawing. Roads curve rather than cross at right angles, and the town's outline is soft and irregular.
