Xincheng lies in the uplands of southern Gansu, in country where the Loess and Tibetan plateaus meet. The terrain is mountainous, and settlements here grow along valley floors where there is flat ground and water. On a map, that means the town stretches out in a line, following the river and the road rather than spreading in a circle.
The built-up area is modest, with a main street and a handful of side lanes climbing a short way up the slopes. Beyond that, terraced fields and hillsides take over quickly. Roads leading out of town follow valleys and bend with the land, sometimes cutting sharply around spurs of higher ground.
