Yecla stands on the high plain of the Altiplano in the north of the Region of Murcia, close to the borders with Albacete and Alicante. On a map the old town climbs the lower slopes of the Cerro del Castillo in narrow, irregular streets. Newer districts spread out in a straighter pattern across the flat land below, and beyond them vineyards and fields cover the plain.
Wine is central to Yecla's identity. The town gives its name to its own denomination of origin, known especially for Monastrell, and it also has a long furniture-making tradition. Nearby, Monte Arabí holds prehistoric rock art that is part of the UNESCO-listed rock art of the Mediterranean Basin, and the blue-tiled dome of the Basílica de la Purísima marks the skyline.
