Yulong lies in the mountains of southern Gansu, in the Longnan area, where the land is broken into steep ridges and narrow river valleys. On the map, the town is a small, concentrated cluster: a main road following the valley, streets packed tightly on the flat ground beside it, and very little development on the slopes rising on either side.
In this part of China, geography sets strict limits, and settlements follow rivers and roads rather than spreading freely. Farmland, small villages and winding mountain roads fill the wider landscape.
