Zhouqu Chengguanzhen is the seat of Zhouqu County, in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of southern Gansu. The town follows the Bailong River through a deep valley, and from above it is long and thin: streets run parallel to the water, and the built-up area stops wherever the slopes become too steep to build on.
That setting has shaped the town's history as well as its form. In August 2010 heavy rain triggered a devastating mudslide that swept through part of the town, one of the worst natural disasters in the region in recent decades. Rebuilding and flood defences since then have changed parts of the riverbank and the gullies above it.
