Zirndorf lies just west of Fürth and Nuremberg in Middle Franconia. The small river Bibert flows through the town. On a map it sits at the point where the metropolitan area begins to break into fields and woods. Housing and commercial areas press in from the east, while open farmland lies to the west.
The town centre is compact, with a few main streets meeting near the church and town hall. Residential areas spread around it in a mix of older lanes and post-war cul-de-sacs. To the north the land rises to the Alte Veste, a wooded hill where a major battle of the Thirty Years' War was fought in 1632. Zirndorf is also the home of Playmobil, whose headquarters and large leisure park stand on the edge of town.

North of the centre, the wooded hill of the Alte Veste leaves a dark, open patch on the map. It marks the site of Wallenstein's 1632 camp and battle.
