Agege lies on the Lagos mainland, north of Ikeja and near the international airport. The ground is flat and almost entirely built up. From above it is a thick, irregular mesh of small streets and compounds, broken by a few main roads and by the railway, which runs through the area on its way north out of Lagos.
The district is one of the most densely populated parts of metropolitan Lagos, with busy markets and a strong commercial street life. Its name is widely known in Nigeria through Agege bread, a soft, dense loaf that has become a standard Lagos breakfast.
An Agege map poster shows how tightly this part of Lagos is woven together. There are no large lakes or grand parks, only the texture of countless short streets, the straight cut of the railway and the arterial roads that tie the district to the rest of the city.
