Apicum-Açu is a municipality on the northern coast of Maranhão, in a part of Brazil where the coast is broken into estuaries, mangroves and low islands. From above, the boundary between land and sea is never simple. Tidal channels wind through the mangrove, small islands sit offshore, and the town itself occupies a patch of firmer ground among the waterways.
The name refers to the apicum, a term used in Brazil for the salt flats that form behind mangrove forests, and the landscape here is shaped by tides. On a map the network of channels creates intricate, branching patterns, closer to a leaf's veins than to a street plan.
An Apicum-Açu map poster is less about streets than about water. The town's compact centre provides a small cluster of detail, while the rest of the frame fills with channels, inlets and islands. In black and white it becomes an almost abstract composition, one of the more unusual subjects for a map poster.
