Araxá Map Poster & Print
Araxá is in the Alto Paranaíba region of Minas Gerais, on rolling high ground. The map shows a town without a strict grid. Streets curve around hills and valleys, and neighbourhoods spread out along ridges. South of the centre is the Barreiro, where mineral springs made Araxá famous as a spa in the twentieth century.
The Barreiro complex is built around the Grande Hotel and its thermal baths, set in large grounds with gardens and woodland. On a map it looks like a green island within the town. Paths and small roads wind through it, a clear contrast to the dense residential streets further north.
Araxá is also known for mining. The deposits near town produce much of the world's niobium, a metal used in steel alloys. Locally the town is linked to Dona Beja, a nineteenth-century figure whose story has become legend.
