Arzignano is in the province of Vicenza, where the Chiampo valley opens onto the Venetian plain. It is at the centre of one of the world's most important leather tanning districts, and the industry has shaped the valley floor for decades. Above the town, a hill carries the remains of its medieval fortifications, which offer a very different view of the place.
On a map, Arzignano is split between two textures. The older centre and residential streets gather around the base of the hills and climb their slopes in winding lines. The valley floor holds the large blocks of the industrial zone, laid out regularly along the river and the main roads. The contrast between the fine, irregular historic grain and the broad industrial plots is clear in black and white.
