Athens Map Poster & Print
Athens fills a wide basin in Attica, enclosed by mountains on three sides and open to the Saronic Gulf on the fourth. The city is dense and almost continuous, and its streets spread in every direction until they reach the slopes of Hymettus, Parnitha and Penteli.
Within this web of streets, rocky hills rise as blank islands. The Acropolis is the most famous, with the Parthenon on its summit and the Ancient Agora and Plaka below. Lycabettus, taller and steeper, stands a little to the northeast. Around them runs the nineteenth-century triangle of the modern centre, framed by Ermou, Stadiou and Athinas streets, with Syntagma and Omonia squares at the corners.
To the south the city reaches the coast and the port of Piraeus. The Athens map poster that results is a portrait of one of the world's oldest cities, still planned around a sacred rock.

The central district between Syntagma, Omonia and Monastiraki follows a triangular plan from the nineteenth century. It gives the centre a clear, recognisable geometry.
Hills in the grid
Lycabettus, Philopappou and other hills interrupt the dense street network. They appear as calm, open areas in an otherwise crowded print.
