Poros Map Poster & Print
Poros is made of two parts. Sphairia is a small, rounded volcanic island that holds the town. Kalavria is larger, hilly and pine-covered, and makes up most of the island. They are joined by a narrow neck crossed by a small bridge. On the map, the town's lanes climb the slopes of Sphairia, and its waterfront faces the mainland town of Galatas across a very narrow channel.
The channel is so narrow that small boats cross it all day long, and the water between the two towns looks more like a river than a sea. On Kalavria are the remains of an ancient sanctuary of Poseidon, where, according to tradition, the orator Demosthenes died. A clock tower above the town is the best-known landmark in the harbour.
A Poros map poster captures that close relationship with the mainland. There is the tight town on its round island, the thin channel and the coast of Galatas just opposite. Behind them, the wooded bulk of Kalavria is ringed by a coastal road and small coves. It is a very compact and legible map.
