Baksan River
Fed by glaciers on Elbrus, the river flows past the town in a wide channel. On the map its branching course is the most expressive shape on the page.

关于地图
Baksan Map Poster & Print
Baksan lies in Kabardino-Balkaria, north of Nalchik, where the Baksan River leaves the foothills of the Caucasus and flows out across a broad plain. On a map the river is the organising feature, passing the town in a wide, braided channel. The streets form a fairly regular pattern of long blocks spread across the flat land beside it.
Upstream, the Baksan valley climbs toward Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe, and is one of the best-known mountain routes in the Caucasus. The town itself sits well below that terrain, surrounded by farmland. A Baksan map poster shows the point where the valley widens: river, roads and neighbourhoods on level ground, with the mountains just out of frame.
In black and white the river's channels and gravel banks form an intricate, flowing shape, while the town's straight streets provide a steady counterpoint. Roads heading south into the valley and north across the plain complete the composition. The map tells both a mountain story and a plains story in a single frame.

Grid on the plain
The town's residential streets run in long, straight rows across level ground. They give the poster an ordered texture beside the river's natural curves.
Road to Elbrus
The route up the Baksan valley toward Elbrus and its ski resorts starts near here. On the poster it leads away from town toward the mountains, a line with a long destination.
