Bandiagara Map Poster & Print
Bandiagara stands on a sandstone plateau in central Mali, in the Mopti region. On a map, the town looks like a loose cluster of compound walls, sandy lanes and a few wider roads. Fields and bare rock surround it, and seasonal streams run across the plateau. A short distance to the east, the land drops away at the Bandiagara Escarpment, a cliff line that runs for about 150 kilometres.
The escarpment and the plain below are the heart of the Dogon country, and together they form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Villages built into the cliffs and granaries set against the rock have made the area known around the world. Bandiagara itself has long served as the main town and market for the plateau.
