Barbastro Map Poster & Print
Barbastro lies in the province of Huesca, where the plains of Aragon begin to rise toward the Pyrenees. The River Vero runs through the town in a narrow valley just before it joins the Cinca. From above, the old centre is a knot of irregular streets on the slopes above the river, with newer districts spreading across the flatter land around it.
The town is the centre of the Somontano wine region, whose vineyards cover the surrounding hills, and its cathedral dates from the sixteenth century. Barbastro also has a long place in Spanish history: its siege in 1064 is often cited as an early episode of the crusading era. Today, the old quarter still keeps its tight medieval layout.
