Bautzen Map Poster & Print
Bautzen, known as Budyšin in Sorbian, sits on a rocky plateau above the Spree in Upper Lusatia, eastern Saxony. The river cuts a deep valley along the western edge of the old town, and the medieval centre crowds onto the high ground above it. From above you can still follow the line of the old fortifications, a ring of streets and walls around the dense cluster of lanes.
Bautzen is known as the town of towers, and many of its gates and defensive towers still stand. At the western tip is the Ortenburg castle. St Peter's Cathedral has been shared by Catholics and Protestants since the Reformation, a rare arrangement in Europe. The town is also a centre of Sorbian culture, and street signs are bilingual. North of the town, the Spree widens into a large reservoir.
