Bekalta lies in the Monastir governorate, in Tunisia's Sahel region, a few kilometres inland from the Mediterranean. The map shows a compact town surrounded by olive groves, with roads leading toward the coast and neighbouring towns. Along the shoreline, the land ends in a gently curving coast with small headlands and beaches.
Near Bekalta, at Ras Dimass, lie the remains of ancient Thapsus, where Julius Caesar defeated his opponents in 46 BC. The Sahel is also one of Tunisia's great olive-growing regions, and the groves around the town form a steady, textured pattern across the landscape.
