Bismil lies in southeastern Turkey, east of Diyarbakır, on the broad, fertile plain of the upper Tigris. The river passes close to the town, winding across a wide floodplain, and the land around it is flat and extensively farmed. On a map Bismil reads as a compact urban area set among long, straight field boundaries and rural roads.
Agriculture shapes both the economy and the landscape here, with irrigated cultivation spreading across the plain. The town is the centre of a populous district of Diyarbakır Province, with markets, schools and services for the surrounding villages.
