Bukavu sits where Lake Kivu narrows at its southern end and drains into the Ruzizi River. The shoreline here is anything but straight. Several peninsulas reach into the water like the fingers of a hand, and the city has settled onto them and onto the steep hills behind. On a map the result is an intricate outline, half land and half lake.
Streets follow the slopes rather than a grid, winding up hillsides and along the ridges of each peninsula. The lower districts near the water hold older, colonial-era avenues and villas, while dense neighbourhoods climb higher. Across the narrow Ruzizi lies the Rwandan town of Rusizi, linked to Bukavu by bridges over the river.
Bukavu is the capital of South Kivu. It is also the gateway to Kahuzi-Biega National Park, known for its eastern lowland gorillas. Water dominates a Bukavu map poster. Lake bays sweep in between the headlands, giving it one of the most distinctive city shapes in Central Africa.
