Cárdenas Map Poster & Print
Cárdenas sits on the Bay of Cárdenas on Cuba's northern coast, in Matanzas Province, a short distance from the resort peninsula of Varadero. It was founded in the 19th century as a sugar port, and it was planned. Its streets form one of the most regular grids in Cuba, laid out in straight lines that run toward the waterfront.
The city is called the Ciudad Bandera, the Flag City, because the Cuban flag was first raised here in 1850 during Narciso López's expedition. The town's squares and old sugar warehouses recall its busy port past. Horse-drawn carriages were still a familiar sight on its streets well into recent decades.
A Cárdenas map poster makes the most of that geometry. The even blocks meet the curving shore of the bay, and the thin line of the Hicacos Peninsula runs off to the north.
