Châteaudun, in the Eure-et-Loir department, stands on a limestone spur above the river Loir, with its château at the edge of the cliff overlooking the valley. The map shows this clearly: the river curves along the foot of the town, and the château marks the point where the plateau drops towards the water.
The town centre has an unusual structure. After a great fire in 1723 destroyed much of it, Châteaudun was rebuilt on a regular plan of straight streets and a large central square, which contrasts sharply with the surviving medieval lanes that twist down the slope near the château.
A Châteaudun map poster captures both sides of that story: the geometric 18th-century grid on the plateau and the older, irregular quarter clinging to the cliff. Add the Loir winding through its valley, and the print has an unusually clear sense of history written in its streets.
