Chester Map Poster & Print
Chester sits in north-west England, close to the Welsh border, on a sandstone ridge above a bend in the River Dee. It was founded as the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix, and the Roman plan is still visible in the four main streets that meet at the Cross in the centre.
From above, the most striking feature is the circuit of city walls, the most complete in Britain, enclosing the historic core in a near-rectangle. Within them sit the cathedral and the Rows, two-level galleried shopping streets. Outside the western wall, the Roodee, England's oldest racecourse, occupies a green oval on the riverbank.
A Chester map poster shows the River Dee curving around the southern side of the city, crossed by the Old Dee Bridge and the Grosvenor Bridge, with the canal running beneath the northern walls. It is a city where two thousand years of planning remain easy to read.
