Colomba, also called Colomba Costa Cuca, lies in the department of Quetzaltenango, on the Pacific-facing slope of the Guatemalan highlands. On a map, the town centre has a compact grid of blocks around its central square, in the way of many towns in the region. Outside the centre, roads and paths wind through hilly, ravine-cut terrain covered in farms.
This part of Quetzaltenango descends from the volcanic highlands toward the coastal lowlands, and its mild, humid climate suits coffee. The area around Colomba is known for coffee fincas, and the town serves the rural communities spread across the slopes. It is a working agricultural town rather than a tourist centre.
