Compostela Map Poster & Print
Compostela lies in the south of Nayarit, inland from the Pacific coast, in hilly country known for coffee and tobacco growing. Founded in the first decades of Spanish rule, it served for a time as the seat of the kingdom of Nueva Galicia before the capital moved to Guadalajara, a history that still shapes the orderly layout of its centre.
The historic core follows a grid extending from the main plaza and the parish church dedicated to Santiago Apóstol. From above, those regular blocks give way at the edges to looser streets that follow the contours of the terrain, while highways lead away toward Tepic and toward the coast.
