Cuneo Map Poster & Print
Cuneo takes its name from its shape. The old town sits on a long, narrow terrace that tapers to a point where the Stura di Demonte and Gesso rivers converge, and from above it looks exactly like a wedge driven between two valleys. Steep banks drop on either side, leaving the city perched above wide riverbeds and green floodplain.
Down the middle of the wedge runs a straight line of arcaded streets, via Roma in the historic tip and corso Nizza in the newer part, meeting at Piazza Galimberti, a vast rectangular square. Founded in 1198, Cuneo became a provincial capital of Piedmont, and the Maritime Alps rise on the southern horizon.

The plateau's edges are drawn by the rivers, the central axis is unmistakable, and the regular blocks of the nineteenth-century expansion contrast with the tighter medieval core at the point.
