Frederico Westphalen lies in the far north of Rio Grande do Sul, near the border with Santa Catarina, in the rolling country above the Uruguay River valley. The centre occupies higher ground, and from there the streets run down the slopes in several directions. The result is a plan that is partly regular and partly shaped by the hills, which gives it an attractive, uneven outline.
The town is best known as a university centre for its region. Its campuses bring students from the surrounding municipalities, and teaching buildings and green grounds show up on the map as larger, open blocks set among the residential streets. Beyond the edge of town, small farms and patches of woodland cover the hills, typical of the colonised north of the state.
