Gothara is a small town in the Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, in the northeastern part of the state. On a map it looks modest and compact. A dense cluster of lanes forms the centre, and a few longer roads run out from it toward neighbouring settlements. With a population of roughly seventeen thousand, the whole town fits comfortably on a single sheet.
This part of Rajasthan belongs to Shekhawati, a historic region known for its painted havelis and for its merchant families, many of whom later moved to India's large commercial cities. The land here is semi-arid. On paper that shows up as wide open space around the built area, with farm tracks and field edges giving the empty areas a faint texture instead of a dense street pattern.
