Halberstadt Map Poster & Print
Halberstadt lies in Saxony-Anhalt, north of the Harz mountains. Its centre grew around the cathedral hill, where the Gothic cathedral of St Stephen and St Sixtus faces the Liebfrauenkirche across a long open square. From above, this ridge stands out clearly, with the older streets gathered around it and later districts spreading outward along roads and the railway line.
Much of the old town was destroyed by bombing in April 1945, and the centre combines surviving timber-framed houses with rebuilt and newer buildings. Halberstadt is also known for an unusual performance: in the Burchardi church, an organ is playing John Cage's piece As Slow As Possible, planned to last 639 years, with each chord change drawing visitors.
