Hāyk’ Map Poster & Print
Hāyk’ lies in the Amhara highlands on the road between Addis Ababa and Dessie, next to the lake that gives it its name. On the map, Lake Hayk is the dominant shape: a compact freshwater lake enclosed by hills, with the town on the lower ground near its shore and the main road running through.
The lake is known for the monastery of Hayk Istifanos, on a peninsula at its edge, which was an important centre of learning in medieval Ethiopia. The surrounding hills are steep and farmed, and roads and paths wind between terraced fields and small settlements.
A Hāyk’ map poster sets the town against the lake. The water fills a large part of the composition, the peninsula juts into it, and the town's streets and the highway sit alongside. It is a simple but strong image, shaped by landscape more than by buildings.
