Kombolcha lies in the South Wollo zone of Ethiopia's Amhara region, in a valley at the foot of the escarpment that climbs to Dessie. The main north–south road from Addis Ababa runs directly through it, and the town is arranged along this route. There is a central strip of commercial blocks, and neighbourhoods fan out toward the surrounding hills.
Kombolcha has grown into one of the country's industrial centres, with textile works, an industrial park and a dry port for goods moving toward Djibouti. Its airport also serves nearby Dessie. On the map these facilities appear as large, regular parcels set apart from the smaller, looser pattern of homes and lanes.
