Honda sits where the Gualí river meets the Magdalena, Colombia's great waterway, and the map shows it clearly. The town is split by moving water, with neighbourhoods on the banks and a colonial centre of narrow, sloping streets set above the rivers. Hills rise steeply around it, so the built area follows the valleys and never spreads into a regular grid.
For centuries Honda was the point where river traffic on the Magdalena stopped because of the rapids, and goods moved overland toward Bogotá. That role left a historic centre of cobbled streets and old houses. Honda is often called the city of bridges, and the many crossings over its rivers are the town's most distinctive feature from above.
