Iriba lies in Wadi Fira Province in eastern Chad, in dry Sahel country near the border with Sudan. From above, the town is a low, spreading settlement of compounds and sandy streets. Walled yards, rather than continuous rows of buildings, define its blocks. Beyond the last houses the land opens into sparse scrub, crossed by the dry beds of seasonal wadis that fill only during the short rains.
The area is the homeland of the Zaghawa people, and Iriba has long been a regional centre for trade and administration. Since the Darfur conflict began in the early 2000s, large camps for Sudanese refugees have been set up nearby, and the town has become an important base for humanitarian work in eastern Chad.
