Karonga Map Poster
Karonga lies in the Northern Region of Malawi, on the north-western shore of Lake Malawi, not far from the border with Tanzania. From above, the lake dominates one side of the map. The town spreads across the flat lakeshore plain, with the main road running north to south and streets branching off toward the water and inland.
The area is known for its fossils. Remains of the dinosaur Malawisaurus were found in the Karonga district, and early human fossils have also been discovered in the region. The town's Cultural and Museum Centre presents these finds. To the west the land rises toward the escarpment, which frames the lakeshore strip.
