Kattivākkam is a locality on the coast north of Chennai, in Tamil Nadu, close to the Ennore area. From above, it sits on a narrow band of land between the Bay of Bengal and the backwaters and creeks that lie just inland. The streets follow this strip, running parallel to the shore with short lanes connecting them, so the map has a strongly linear, coast-bound character.
The Ennore coast is known for its port and industrial facilities as well as its fishing communities, and the interplay of water, settlement and infrastructure defines the area. On a map, the long straight shoreline and the irregular shapes of the backwaters give the built-up areas a clear setting.
