Khetri lies in the Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, among the northern ranges of the Aravalli hills. The old town sits in a valley where the hills close in, and its map shows a dense web of irregular lanes, with slopes and ridgelines rising steeply around the settlement.
The area is known for copper. Mining here has a long history, and in the twentieth century a large copper complex was developed, with the planned township of Khetri Nagar laid out nearby in a more regular pattern. The two settlements show very different street textures, one organic and one designed.
Khetri also has a well-known link with Swami Vivekananda, whose close friend and patron was the Raja of Khetri. A Khetri map poster brings together the old town, the hills around it and the mining landscape, a place where history and industry sit side by side in the same valley.
