Khromtau Map Poster & Print
Khromtau lies in the Aktobe Region of western Kazakhstan, on open steppe with long horizons in every direction. The town grew around the mining of chromite, the ore from which chromium is made, and its name reflects that. On a map, it has two distinct parts: a residential town of regular blocks and the large industrial landscape of mines and processing sites nearby.
The residential streets follow a planned layout typical of Soviet-era industrial towns, with straight roads, apartment blocks and open courtyards. Beyond them, the mining area is shaped very differently, with the stepped rims of open pits, spoil heaps and haul roads drawing wide curves across the ground. Few towns show their purpose so plainly from above.
