The Lualaba
The wide upper Congo flows past the town, and its sandbanks and islands shift with the seasons. The river forms the largest open shape on the map.

关于地图
Kindu Map Poster & Print
Kindu is the capital of Maniema province in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It stands on the Lualaba River, the upper course of the Congo, which is broad here and dotted with sandbanks and islands. On a map the town stretches along the riverbank in a grid of streets, with its port and older quarters close to the water.
Kindu grew as a river and railway town. A rail line from the south ends here, linking the Lualaba to the network towards Katanga, and boats carry goods downstream towards Ubundu and Kisangani. The surrounding province is largely forested, with farmland and villages along the roads. The town is the main administrative and trading centre for a wide area.
A Kindu map poster shows the essential relationship between town and river. The Lualaba fills a broad part of the frame, its islands and banks drawn in soft curves, and the streets form a modest grid beside it. It is a simple, strong composition and an uncommon map to find on the wall of anyone with roots in Maniema.

Riverside grid
The town's streets follow a regular plan laid out along the bank, with the port and older quarters closest to the water and newer areas further inland.
Railway terminus
The railway from the south ends at Kindu. Its line enters the town as a long, gentle stroke and meets the river where rail and boat traffic come together.
