Kizlyar Map Poster & Print
Kizlyar lies in northern Dagestan on the lowland of the Terek delta, not far inland from the Caspian Sea. The land is almost completely flat, and on a map the Terek's branches, old channels and irrigation canals are the most important features. They wind through the town and the farmland around it, dividing the ground into irregular sections.
The town was founded as a fortress in 1735 and served for a long time as a Russian outpost on the southern frontier. The older streets near the river still reflect its early role, and later districts are set out in more regular blocks. Several roads lead out across the delta toward the Caspian coast and the rest of Dagestan.
Kizlyar is widely known for its brandy, produced by a long-established local distillery, and the vineyards around it are part of the landscape. Irrigation canals
Straight canals cross the surrounding farmland and bring water to fields and vineyards. They add a geometric pattern to the looser shapes of the delta.
Fortress core
The older part of town sits near the river, where the eighteenth-century fortress once stood. Its streets are more tightly spaced than the newer districts.
