Koduvayur is a town in Palakkad district, in the part of Kerala that opens toward the gap in the Western Ghats. The land here is flatter and drier than on the coast, and wide paddy fields surround the settlements. On a map, the town shows as a loose network of roads and lanes. It is less a tight core than a spread of houses along the routes.
Rice cultivation shapes the whole scene. The fields form broad open areas crossed by bunds and narrow paths, and coconut palms line the edges of the homesteads. Small tanks and channels hold water for the crops. Roads follow the higher ground between the fields, which gives the street pattern its gentle, unplanned curves.
