Kondapalle sits where a chain of low, rugged hills rises from the flat country of the Krishna basin in Andhra Pradesh. On a map the hills appear as an irregular mass of contour to the west, with the town gathered along roads at their base and spreading east toward the larger urban area of Vijayawada.
On the ridge above town stands Kondapalli Fort, a hill fortress with a long history under successive regional powers. Its walls and approach roads climb into the rocky ground, a quiet, winding counterpoint to the dense lanes below. Railway lines and highways cross the flat land nearby, linking the town to the wider region.
Kondapalle is widely known for its carved and painted wooden toys, made from a soft local wood and recognised with a geographical indication.
