Mahābād Map Poster & Print
Mahābād lies in the southern part of West Azerbaijan province, in a valley where the Mahabad River flows north toward Lake Urmia. The city stretches along the river with hills rising on either side, so on a map its outline follows the valley, long and fairly narrow. The older centre sits close to the water, and newer districts climb the slopes.
Just south of the city, a dam holds back the river in a reservoir whose irregular shape stands out clearly on the map. The water irrigates the plains downstream, where fields spread out toward the lake. Bridges connect the two banks within the city and give the street pattern a series of crossing points.
Mahābād is a major centre of Kurdish culture in Iran, and in 1946 it was the capital of the short-lived Republic of Mahabad. A Mahābād map poster shows how closely the city is tied to its river. It runs from the reservoir in the south to the streets packed along the banks and the open land beyond.
