Orūmīyeh lies in northwestern Iran on a broad farming plain, with the mountains along the Turkish border to the west and Lake Urmia to the east. On a map the city forms a compact, roughly rounded shape, surrounded by a regular patchwork of orchards and fields. Main avenues radiate out from the centre toward the villages and roads of the plain.
The Shahar Chay river crosses the south of the city, and irrigation channels from the mountains feed the gardens and vineyards around it. The older centre, with its bazaar and historic Jameh Mosque, has a denser and more irregular pattern of streets. Later districts extend outward in straighter blocks, and wider avenues trace longer lines toward the edges.
Lake Urmia, once one of the largest salt lakes in the Middle East, has shrunk dramatically in recent decades, and its retreat has become a widely discussed environmental issue.
